Food for free, Food for free!
Are their eyes closed?
What do they ever do for me?
Like all I do is ghost.
Spend time and money on you,
Shelter you from sun and rain.
I do a few things; one or two
They don’t see the sufferings and pain.

Who weeds the farm, sweeps the floor?
Do they not ask themselves?
Every day they do ignore
The things we do ourselves
Who prepares food, washes the dishes?
The invisible ones do
Still they would shout like dogs and bitches:
You should eat and work too.

Let’s pack our things and run away
To a place where no one knows!
Let’s go away for one whole day
And let’s see how things go.
When no one’s there to sweep and weed,
Maybe they’ll know our worth.
They’ll discover our useful deeds
And observe it henceforth.

We are all maids, but special ones
That’s why we do the work.
‘Tis just a title ‘Daughters and Sons’
A privilege, some luck.
Open their eyes, oh Lord I pray
For them to realize
That as we eat food day by day
We work to pay the price.
NOT FOR FREE
Idorenyin Ekpa
We have come to the cross-roads
And I must either leave or come with you.
I lingered over the choice
But in the darkness of my doubts
You lifted the lamp of love
And I saw in your face
The road that I should take.
The mesh
